Rifaey mosque has been built with similar dimensions to the adjacent Mosque of Sultan Hassan, seems to be a building built shortly after his neighbor, but more than 600 years of time difference between the two mosques, the big size of the mosque was made by the mother of Khedive Ismail because she had promised God to build a large mosque similar to the mosque of Sultan Hassan as soon as she was cured of some disease, and has fulfilled his promise at the end. The Mamluk style motifs that decorate its interior were designed by European architect Max Herz, who also designed the Islamic Museum and the Synagogue SharHashamaim. To the right of the main entrance you can visit the royal tombs
Originally the area was a grave site which was visited by many people ,it was not known if any particular dead, and when they started building the mosque, they have collected the remains of all the graves to be grouped in a single grave within the same mosque, and people still visit today as saints
Inside the mosque, there are very beautiful tombs made of marble of the kings of the ruling family and their wives, for example, the mausoleum of King Fouad, the mausoleum of Khedive Ismail, their wives, his mother Jushiar who founded the mosque, tomb of Sultan Hussein, and the most beautiful and expensive grave site that has to be seen is Bahlawy Mohamed, the Shah of Persia in fine stone tomb of onyx and has a good niche decorated like a mosque
